Sue Leather

I was born near Manchester, in northern England, in a small town not very far from the moors that inspired Emily Brontë to write Wuthering Heights, just to give you an idea of the landscape. One of my earliest memories is sitting in my bedroom with a book, so I guess I’ve always loved to read. I went to university in Leeds, where I studied Modern Languages-Spanish and French. That took me to Spain for two years, where I started teaching English, firstly working as an assistant teacher in a girls’ school in Salamanca.

My background is in ELT: English Language Teaching, mainly based in the UK and the Netherlands. For many years, I ran an English Language Teaching Consultancy, Sue Leather Associates, and travelled extensively for my work as a trainer and consultant. I visited some 50 countries in Europe, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, South America and North America.

Since 2004, I’ve lived with my partner, Jan, near Vancouver on the west coast of Canada, a lovely place to find inspiration. In my spare time, I love to read, hike in our beautiful mountains and travel- oh, and write!

Fiction

Since 1989, I’ve written original fiction for learners, and at the latest count, I have almost 40 books in print.

I am always interested in hearing about Graded Reader projects, and would love to write more original fiction for learners. Contact me here.

I am also currently working on mainstream fiction. I will post updates here.

Editing

As well as writing my own fiction, I worked as Development Editor, then Joint Series Editor for National Geographic’s Page Turners series. I really love working with other writers, both professional ELT writers, and mainstream writers of fiction. I am a member of Editors Canada. You’ll find more about my Editing Services here.
